The national and international headquarters of banks and insurance companies, plus multinational corporates from other industry sectors, are based in this area - many having relocated from downtown Lima to occupy modern office blocks. The capital's most important avenues, Javier Prado and Paseo de la Republica, criss-cross San Isidro, which is also the home of dozens of embassies and consulates. Lima is the largest city of Peru: together with the seaport of Callao, it forms a metropolitan area with a population approaching nine million.
