Mainyard Studios Hackney Central occupies a handsome red brick building at 280 Mare Street, right across the road from the Hackney Empire theatre. Inside, the building mixes private offices, from rooms for one person up to spaces for teams of ten or more, with soundproofed studios built for music making, podcasting and sound design.
The offices are private and lockable, and residents are free to make them their own: several have already become creative studios, from a styling salon to rooms full of prints and plants. Between the rooms there is shared space to work and meet, including a lounge with booth seating and a window bar looking out over Mare Street.
Mainyard is an independent, family run business founded in 2012, and the building is set up as much for the people in it as for the desks: a working community of freelancers, start-ups, makers and creative professionals.
